John Bisset had a son also called John who died without issue leaving his three sisters as co-heiresses to both his father and himself. If Forsyth’s “Moray” is correct the third John Bisset was witness to the writ of the grant of land to Robert le Grant about 1268 from John Prat, knight. If Chalmers'“Caledonia”, vol i. p. 596. is correct in that Gregory le Grant married Mary daughter of Bisset and Lovat she must have been the daughter of the first John Bisset, founder of Beauly priory and the exile. According to the Chamberlain Accounts. Vol i. p.21. Gregory le Grant was sheriff of Inverness in 1263, but Sir William Fraser, in “Chiefs of Grant”, claims that this is a misreading of the text and states that the page of the Rolls referred to shows that Laurence le Grant was sheriff at that time. I can find no written evidence that Gregory le Grant was ever sheriff. (PG) |
