  • Reproduced here with the encouragement of Sir Michael Grant of Grant, Lord Strathspey, 34th Chief and by kind permission of the History Press.
  • I have taken the opportunity to correct a few typos which slipped through the editorial process, but have not changed idiosyncratic spelling from yesteryear.
  • The economics of publishing required that photographs were presented in a separate plates section. I have not included the many images culled from Fraser’s Chiefs of Grant and have tried to find suitable sites within the text for the others.
  • There are a few footnotes in the original publication. I have incorporated these into the text where they occur, They are shown in purple.

FOREWORD

by the Author

I dedicate this book to all Clan Grant in the hope that it will give present and future generations a glimmering of the notable history of the Clan. To cover more ground would exceed my knowledge and fill volumes... As a start there are at least five Grants who have been awarded the Victoria Cross!

I should like to thank my dear wife Olive, who has been a tower of strength in driving me forward, correcting my illegible scribbles, and then typing them. My thanks are due to Rear-Admiral John Grant of Gartenbeg, C.B., D.S.O., for his family report, and to the Lady Tweedsmuir for correcting my passage on the Grants of Monymusk; also my cousin, the Earl of Seafield, who has permitted the reproduction of some of his Grant pictures.

Much appreciation is owed to John and Barbara Grant of Los Angeles, who started off the U.S.A. Clan Grant Society, and especially to George and Lucille Grant of Hixson, Chattanooga, who built up the U.S.A. and Canadian Societies, and who coined the cry 'It's great to be a Grant', always received with loud acclaim. Last, and by no means least, Natalie, Lady Douglas-Hamilton, C.B.E., of New York, who has had us three times there as honoured guests of her American Scottish Foundation, Inc., annual Highland Ball at the Plaza hotel, Manhattan.

Owing to the passage of time and events it has proved impossible to have my book completely up to date. For example, regrettably there is the recent decease of Sir Ewan Macpherson-Grant of Ballindalloch, O.B.E., J.P., D.L.

I should say that acreages where stated are indicative round figures only and that I do not know precisely all the Grant properties that have been sold over the past forty years or so.

As a final note, there is an exciting possibility that the world-wide Clan Grant Societies may be able to complete negotiations to purchase the semi-ruin of Castle Grant!
